Joy Ellis

Joy Ellis started pressing flowers many years ago. She grows most of the flowers, but occasionally collects them along back roads and in fields of wildflowers. Once collected, there are several methods she uses to press each type of flower.  "Care must be taken to process each type of flower individually so as not to burn or discolor them. They can be very fragile and require much care in storing them as well as in making the art pieces. I have also studied the old way of using a flower press. My husband helped me make one that I currently use. It takes more patience and about 2 weeks to successfully dry most flowers, changing the blotting material almost daily.", states the artist. She collects the flowers according to type and color. As she begins an artwork, she already has in mind what she wants to convey. Joy says, "I enjoy making vignettes of flowers growing naturally in my garden. Sometimes just one magnificent specimen will capture my imagination for its beauty and other times I enjoy combining seasonal ones. I make framed pieces, formal presentations, coasters, bookmarks, and cards. Some of these are presented on my handmade paper. I have studied the work of several artists in the WWPE Guild as well as online classes by various presenters. I have developed my own techniques and continue to learn through experience."

Joy Ellis is a member of World Wide Pressed Flower Guild, and the Mississippi Craftmens' Guild. She has held the positions of vice president of the Ridgeland City Garden Club from 2017-2019 and president of the Ridgeland City Garden Club from 2019-2021.
